Microlink’s Assistive Technology Rollout Endorsed by DfE Report

Assistive technology training for schools evaluation report september 2024 IFF reseaqrchDfE report praises Microlink’s ground-breaking approach to Assistive Technology training in schools

In 2023, the Department for Education commissioned Microlink to design and deliver a professional development programme aimed at developing the use of Assistive Technologies in mainstream classrooms. The programme was administered by nasen with contributions from delivery partner Natspec.

The official independent evaluation of the programme is now available here.

“The programme was very carefully designed from the outset to do a number of things” said course creator, Marius Frank.

“Firstly, we wanted to raise awareness of the free tools that already exist, built in to the services everyone uses, such a Microsoft, Google and Apple. There is a world of resource out there, hidden in plain sight! We then encouraged Child-Centred Innovation, linking the technology to the child to the task.

“We also included a detailed Needs Analysis Framework that helped school leaders create their own personalised roadmap to developing and embedding effective practice, aligned to the school’s Strategic Development imperatives.

“The final component was delivered by a team of expert AT Coaches, supported by technical advice available at the point of need, and a catalogue of “What’s New in AT?” webinars from which to draw inspiration and guidance. The package worked!”

The Independent Evaluation highlighted the impact of the programme on teachers, children and their families:

“Following the AT training course, participants reported significant improvements in the independence (92% and 78%) and confidence (89% and 78%) of SEND and EAL pupils respectively.

“Around six-in-ten (61%) also reported improved confidence and over half (58%) reported improved independence levels in non-SEND and non-EAL pupils.

“Additionally, the use of AT had positive impacts on the behaviour and engagement of SEND pupils (86%) and EAL pupils (67%) in a majority of participating schools. It also had a positive impact on the levels of attainment of SEND pupils (64%) and EAL pupils (47%).”  p.11

Microlink has further developed the offer, with the generous support of HSBC Bank, into a CPD-Certified programme called Be ThAT Teacher with more than 200 more school communities either receiving the training or signed up for the next round of free training.

“There has never been a better time to focus on inclusion and technology in schools.” Says Nic Ponsford, Co-Head of Education at Microlink and AT Programme Director. “With a better understanding of creating accessible curriculums for all of our students, we know assistive technology is more than a nice to have – it is life changing.

“In today’s diverse classrooms, assistive technology isn’t a luxury—it’s a lifeline. School leaders must ensure their educators are equipped to unlock every student’s potential, regardless of their learning needs.”
